Chicago's 78th Community Area

The 78th Community Area of Chicago

Chicago is a city of neighborhoods. Officially we have 200+ neighborhoods gathered into 77 community areas. I would argue we have one more area, number 78.

#78 : In Theory

Our 78th neighborhood is comprised of design. I have never lived in a city that values architecture the way Chicago does. The theoretical buildings of Chicago constitute their own "neighborhood". From the birth of skyscrapers after the Great Fire, to ground-breaking designs of today, Chicago is in the forefront of theory.

Chicago Architectural Biennial

October 2015

Here are photos from Chicago's first Architectural Biennial. No single theme was provided for the exhibit. Instead architects, designers and artists from around the world were asked to contemplate the current state of architecture. Sou Fujimoto,  from Japan, explored using found objects as architectural forms. He makes the argument that architecture is found before it's designed.

Here is a sampling of Fujimoto's ad hoc objects interspersed with tiny plastic people at the 2015 Biennial.
